This policy sets out what personal data we collect from readers, the purposes for which we process it, the parties with whom we share it, and the rights available to you. It covers this website and our email editions.

Data you provide. Your email address on subscribing to an edition. Your name, address and message on contacting a desk. Any further information you choose to include in correspondence.

Data collected automatically. Internet protocol address, browser type and version, device and operating system, referring page, pages viewed, session duration, and approximate location inferred from IP address at city or country level.

We neither request nor require financial account details, government identification numbers, or special category data concerning health, religion, trade union membership or political opinion. Readers are asked not to send such material.

To deliver the website and the email editions you have requested, and to maintain them in working order.

To measure readership in aggregate, so that editorial resources are directed towards the coverage readers actually use.

To sell, serve and account for advertising, which funds the journalism.

To secure the site against fraud, unauthorised access and automated abuse, and to meet legal obligations where they arise.

Correspondence is retained for as long as required to resolve the matter and to maintain a record of any editorial complaint, and is then deleted.

Analytics data is retained in aggregate. Raw server logs, including IP addresses, are retained for a limited period for security and diagnostic purposes and are then deleted or anonymised.

Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act, and under the United Kingdom and European Union General Data Protection Regulation where applicable to you, you hold rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection and portability in respect of your personal data.

Consent to optional cookies or to email editions may be withdrawn at any time. Every edition carries a single click unsubscribe facility.

To exercise any right, write to hello@thenairastandard.com. We respond within thirty days. No charge is made for a request and no reader is treated differently for having made one.

A reader who considers that we have mishandled personal data may complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, or to their local supervisory authority within the United Kingdom or European Union.

Data in transit is encrypted and internal access is restricted to personnel who require it. No system is wholly secure, and we will notify affected readers promptly in the event of a breach carrying material risk.

This publication is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their personal data. Where we are informed that such data has been provided, it is deleted.

Amendments to this policy are published here with a revised date. Material changes are announced on the site rather than left for readers to discover.
